How to tape a stick.
Heel to toe, the way most players learn. Five minutes, one roll of cloth tape, some wax and something to trim with.
The blade
-
Strip and clean the blade
Peel off all the old tape. Wipe away leftover adhesive and let the blade dry. New tape sticks best to a clean, dry surface.
-
Anchor at the heel
Start on the back of the blade at the heel. Lay the first pass straight down and around so it locks the end of the tape in place.
-
Wrap toward the toe
Angle the tape slightly and keep wrapping toward the toe, overlapping each pass by about a third of the tape width. Keep tension on the roll so the tape lies flat with no wrinkles.
-
Finish and trim
Wrap right off the end of the toe. Tear the tape, then trim the extra along the bottom and around the toe with scissors or a knife. Press every edge down.
-
Wax it
Rub stick wax firmly across both faces and the bottom edge until the tape looks matte. That is it. Go play.
The knob
-
Build the end
Wrap cloth tape around the very end of the shaft several times, letting it stack into a lip. Six to ten wraps is a common starting point.
-
Add ridges if you like them
For a ladder knob, twist strips of tape into ropes and wrap them around the shaft a finger-width apart below the lip.
-
Cover it all
Wrap down over the ridges and back up again until the knob feels right in your glove. Finish on the underside so the end does not peel.
Make it yours.
